Bowen Therapy Training
Initial training and Post-graduate CPD courses
Initial Training
The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) is not a training organisation. There are many independent training schools that offer Bowen Therapy training, up to qualification level. The colleges and tutors listed on the BTPA website have been assessed to ensure they meet the National Occupational Standards for Bowen Therapy.
Once you have completed your Bowen Therapy training (which usually takes at least 9 months, if you have no prior healthcare qualification), you are entitled to join the BTPA as an Associate or Full member. You will need to have completed Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (AP&P) training prior to taking your final assessment exam (or have another qualification that covered AP&P to at least a Level 3 NVQ (or SCQF Level 6–7) standard.
Full members in the UK are also eligible to register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the voluntary regulator for complementary healthcare practitioners, further enhancing their professional recognition within the NHS and wider healthcare sector.
Newly qualified Full members will be required to attend 2 days of Bowen Therapy training annually (for the first 3 years after qualifying). The college you trained with may offer practitioner revision days, you could repeat part of their Core Bowen training, or you could attend any of the accepted CPD workshops listed on this website.
Postgraduate Training and CPD workshops
To keep therapy-specific knowledge and skills up to date, Full members will need to undertake CPD (Continuing Professional Development) activities. Over the course of a 4-year CPD cycle, at least 14 hours of Bowen Therapy training and 20 hours of Other CPD activities will need to be completed, to meet the BTPA membership requirement. The schools and tutors on the BTPA website provide training in various interpretations of Tom Bowen's work. All Core Bowen training schools have been assessed to ensure their syllabus meets the Core Curriculum for Bowen Therapy (as maintained by the CNHC).
